Aside from our outstanding collection of luxurious handcrafted wines, a big part of what creates the attraction of Handwritten Wines, is the warmth and humbleness of our hospitality team. One such staff member who epitomizes that effortless class and culture, is our senior wine curator, Mr. Matt Beverly. Today, we will dive into his background and passion for Handwritten Wines.

“A 5th Generation Coloradoan, my family comprises of mechanical, electrical and aerospace engineers. But”, Matt confesses, “I follow in the footsteps of my Grandmother, who during my childhood, cooked for many of the local schools and churches. This budding curiosity for restaurants and food service influenced my decision to pursue an early cooking career in very high-end hospitality. That’s where I met my wife Christina. With passions aligned, Christina would seek to step into and learn everything about the wine industry, while I would attend the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) and work under a Michelin Star Chef.

Bright eyed and ambitious, we thought we’d move back to Denver and start our own ‘little thing’. As fate decided, we stretched our stay in Napa a little longer. ‘A little longer’ became a love affair with this beautiful valley, and we’re now celebrating 12 years. After cooking my way around Yountville, I was finally poached into the wine industry, and the rest is history!”

What do you love most about Handwritten Wines?

“I’ve been with the Handwritten team now for 2.5 years, after falling in love with the ‘family first’ culture. here. What I love most about this boutique winery, is working alongside a tight-knit team, who care deeply about the fine details and go above and beyond for our customers. You couldn’t ask for more.

Tasting single vineyard/varietal wines side by side has been an amazing education. What I like to call a tasting of the ‘why’. Why this region vs. that region – why there is a difference between them, and why those subtle differences are so important. Conveying and elevating the importance of site-specific Cabernet Sauvignon, in a friendly, personable and unpretentious way, is what separates our team at Handwritten Wines apart from even the best wineries in Napa Valley.”

Tell us something we don’t know about you.

“In my spare time, I am an avid fisherman, mountain biker and overall outdoorsman. At heart, I’m a family man. Whether Christina and I are custom remodeling our house, traveling whenever and wherever, side-by-side, or enjoying some fabulous Handwritten Wine together at the end of the day.”

Favorite recent trip?

“We recently, pre-COVID, took a trip to Croatia and Prague. Seeking out and discovering the beers of the Czech Republic lived up the hype! During this trip, we also visited an outstanding boutique winery 65 miles outside Prague, close to Germany. We were blown away by the quality of their handcrafted wines. Don’t ask me to spell everything that we had the pleasure of tasting, but it made us feel at home.”

Look out for Matt at your next visit to Handwritten Wines and let him bring you on an epicurean adventure throughout your tasting.
